Cornerstone Patch Progress

What a busy summer for The Power House! And especially for the busy bees at the Cornerstone Patch. Dave from Friends of Hamworthy Park has been otherwise engaged, so attention has been focused on growing in the Nurture Garden and having a tidy up around the pool. With adult volunteers, young people have been weeding, clearing the path to the compost bin, and planting our first Patchlings.

We’ve had tools donated by one of the Youth Project Member’s mums, a planter from The Old Boys Club via Dave Harris along with a Bee Hotel. We should be getting Mason Bees taking residence soon. Just need to grow them some flowers.

The wonderful Hamworthy resident Laura has offered her time to help Alix set up Cornerstone Patch, so plans are now being made on how best to bring forward the community food growing. Laura’s husband has offered to excavate the top of the pool. A scrape to level it out, with a local company to do a grab away. Then we’ll install raised beds on top, maximising the plot size while reducing the work needed to prepare the space.

The Power House has still got Seedbed Trust Hamworthy Community Development funds, so we have used this to purchase two accessible raised planters to add to the existing raised bed in the Nurture Garden. This means we can continue growing, making this be a pilot run. And we can start learning about the space through the growing season and plan for next year. We have an Elderflower tree, so Elderflower cordial is on the cards next year.

We’re seeking funding sources to make all this happen. Watch this space!
