The Federation of Hamworthy Primary Schools Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Thanks to our Power House volunteer who works at Hamworthy Park Junior School, this was the first of our Poole Britannia! Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. Principal Susannah Hill and team worked with The Power House to create a glorious school wide celebration to make lasting memories for pupils to share with their children and grandchildren.

Arts Council England Platinum Jubilee funding has commissioned seven mosaic plaques each depicting a decade of the Queen’s reign. Hamworthy Park Junior’s Art Lead, Leisa, linked us with Bristol’s David Bowers of Mosaic Madness. And the coming together and creating began

Pupils from Hamworthy Park Junior and Twin Sails Infants and Nursery were invited to submit designs. The schools’ Jubilee Team then went through a selection process, with a little input from our newly appointed Jubilee Exhibition Curator Maureen and David advising on “mosaicability”, for 29 designs to be chosen to make up the mosaics.

204 Pupil Premium children, school staff, and Alix and Maureen all laid tiles to create the first of our legacy Jubilee artworks which will be part of Poole Britannia! Jubilee Exhibition before being installed on an adjoining wall between the two schools.

Then the whole school participated in a two week Platinum Jubilee learning project, with each year group learning about one decade to produce art work to go on display for parents and family friends to see on their Jubilee Day. The Power House commissioned CoCreate to deliver Creative Writing and Drama workshops led by Alice Flynn with Rohan Gotobed, and Ali Sharpe gave the school a score and MP3 of her Jubilee Song also commissioned by The Power House thanks to Arts Council England. Ali came in to teach Year 6’s the song.

School staff were absolutely fantastic in setting up both school halls in just a couple of hours with their Jubilee Exhibition, for their Jubilee Day on Thursday 26th May.

The queue to get in to the school for Jubilee celebration went right down the street. Over 1000 parents, carers and family friends came to see their childrens’ work, and then gather in the playground for a Jubilee Sing and cake.

In a hot summer, the cloud gave some light relief, with the sun breaking through to smile on everyone. Performing some very moving songs, all the school children sang their hearts out: Sunshine In My Heart, Our Queen, Earth Song, Sing - with Year 6’s singing the very first public performance of Ali Sharpe’s Jubilee Song.

A truly special time commemorating this once in a lifetime moment, building memories to be shared with children and grandchildren.

A selection of the children’s art work and the seven Mosaic Murals will be on display as part of The Power House’s Poole Britannia! Platinum Jubilee Exhibition, opening with a Celebration Day on 25th June.
