HPJS Learning Project

The Power House Poole worked closely with The Federation of Hamworthy Primary Schools (Hamworthy Park Junior School and Twin Sails) in the lead up to the Platinum Jubilee. The schools expressed an interest in holding a school-wide learning project centred around literacy, history and the creative arts. After hearing about the Arts Council England Platinum Jubilee partnerships funding, an invitation to partner was made between the schools and The Power House. Having already received an invitation from the Lighthouse, Poole for a collaboration, the seeds were sown and soon started to blossom.

All of the staff at Hamworthy Park Junior School and Twin Sails came together to plan a two-week Jubilee curriculum, whereby each year group studied a decade of the Queen’s reign.

The project commenced with artist, David Bowers of Mosaic Madness being invited in to help produce 7 legacy art mosaic murals.

The project then culminated in a school wide community Jubilee Day to celebrate all of their children’s learning. The two schools halls became galleries and displayed all of the children’s work and the outcomes of the creative workshops that were also provided. Over 1000 parents and carers came to listen to the children sing a range of songs, including Ali Sharpe’s Jubilee song. Many parents commented that it was an incredibly emotional experience to hear the children sing their hearts out in their first full-scale open event since the pandemic.

After the Jubilee Day, the children were then invited to participate in the Poole Britannia! Event at The Lighthouse Poole and the mosaics were on display in The Lighthouse Poole gallery for a month as part of the Poole Britannia! exhibition.
