Creative arts workshops

The Power House Poole, as part of the Poole Britainnia! Platinum Jubilee Project were delighted to be able to offer The Federation of Hamworthy Primary Schools the chance for their pupils to experience two creative arts workshops. Cocreate CIC, an arts and wellbeing company based in Bournemouth delivered the creative arts workshops which were lead by Alice Flynn and Rohan Gotobed.

Drama Workshop

Twenty-four year 2, 3 and 4 children had the privilege to participate in a series of three afternoon drama workshops which had a Jubilee-themed focus. The children had the opportunity to play lots of drama games to get to know each other and then explored drama devices such as flocking and shoaling (ways of moving around the stage), freeze framing and hot seating. During the three days, the children explored themes such as belonging, citizenship, hopes for the future. Two of the year 4 children recorded the drama and then it was played at The Lighthouse Theatre in their cinema.

Creative Writing Workshop

Years Five and Six of Twin Sails Infant School and Hamworthy Park Junior School created new poems as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Celebrations, which were facilitated by Alice Flynn on behalf of Cocreate CIC.

Twenty children created a series of ‘Septet’ poems.

What does Septet mean? A septet is the name for a seven-line poem.

We chose seven lines to represent the seven decades of the Queen’s reign. A septet is also known as a Rhyme Royal – so it was perfect for this occasion! A group of seven sonnets is called a crown – so we could say that seven septets make a crown, too!

The children’s work was displayed at the school during their Platinum Jubilee Open Day and a selection was displayed at The Lighthouse.

The children were also invited to participate in another one hour workshop with Alice Flynn and then perform their poems to a live audience at the Poole Britannia Open Day at The Lighthouse.
